What is the PfMP certification in project management?

I came across a post today which mentioned, in passing, that there is a  new PfMP certifications in the project management realm.

What is this certification? And who is it for? Is it also for project managers? And who is responsible for issuing this certification? And when what is created?

Thanks in advance to whoever answers my questions!

PfMP is the Portfolio Management Professional certification, which is a new PMI certification. The official handbook can be found here: http://www.pmi.org/Certification/~/media/PDF/Certifications/pfmphandbook.ashx

It has more or less similar requirements to the PMP and it also has the concept of PDUs.

Project Portfolio Management is about aligning your organizations change initiatives with strategy.  It is about ensuring that you run the projects and programs which best fit your corporate aims.  And continually reviewing the portfolio to make sure the organization is achieving the best return on the its project and program investments.

Is it for project manager?  No.  It's for senior management at the strategic level who are responsible for delivering business level benefits.  Project managers are responsible for their projects delivering products / outputs on time and budget.

It's often put this way:  project and program management is about doing project and programs the right way.  Portfolio management is about doing the right projects and programs.

The Portfolio Management Professional certification is in the pilot phase with PMI at present.

Until that is available the only global Portfolio Management certification is Management of Portfolios.  It works from 2 cycles a Project Definiation Cycle to understand and plan the portfolio.  And a Portfolio Delivery cycle to manage day to day areas such as portfolio finances, risk and benefits.

Management of Portfolios certification is available at the Foundation and Practitioner levels.  More info here:

Hope that is helpful
