What is the difference between a project director and a project manager?

Who is the project director? Is he the one who "directs" the project? And if he is, doesn't that make him the project manager? If he's not, what makes him different than the project manager?

Does the project manager position fall under the project director in the project management hierarchy (in case the two roles are different)?

Even if the roles are different, can the role of the project director be embodied by the project manager?
