Maybe this is the stupidest question on this website but I have no idea what project management is. Is it some kind of software? And why is it used?

Project Management is a process, it's not a software. It is a standardized process to manage projects. The software usually adapts parts of the standardized process (the planning and the executing phases) to make the job of the project manager easier. Project management, in its pure form, can be done without a software at all. In fact, project management was implemented thousands of years before computers were invented: you think the construction project managers that built the pyramids used MS Project?
