What are the top project management certifications currently offered? Which one is the best? I know about the PMP and PRINCE2, are there more? Please list all of them in order of importance and explain why should the project manager choose the top PM certification over the rest (I think the top one will be the PMP).

The top project management certification is by far the PMP (the project management professional, which is issued by the PMI, the project management institute).

The second most important PM certification is the PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments), which is very prominent in western Europe, especially the UK.

There are other low profile PM certification that I don't advise going with.

I think that the PMP controls about 70% of the PM certifications market, and after that you have the PRINCE2, with around 10% to 15%.

Note that PMI has also another certification, which is the CAPM (Certified Assistant in Project Management) with some significant amount of certified people. The CAPM though is not for project managers, but for people wanting to become project managers.
