why is it imporant to know how many communication channels are on a given project?

How a project manager uses that total number of communication channels? What does it mean to add 10 more channels? or 300 channels? Why is important for a PM to know that number?

It is used both as a reminder that a large portion of the work of the PM is to communicate about the project -- status, timelines, other periodic updates and that the PM needs to identify all the stakeholders to complete a communications plan.
