What are interim plans? What are they used for? And are they necessary for the actual management of the project?

How does an interim project plan differ from normal project? Is the interim project plan part of the project plan?

An interim plan is a term often used in MS Project, it is a snapshot of the current project  start dates and end dates, and is used to for comparison against the project baseline to see how the project is faring.

You can have up to 10 interim plans in every project.

You can read more on how to create an interim plan here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/create-or-update-a-baseline-or-an-interim-plan-HA010156784.aspx
