I'm not sure I understand what dummy activities are from what I have read about them. Can someone explain to me in easy language what are they? What is the the usefulness of dummy activities?

A dummy activity is used in AOA (Activity on Arrow) diagrams to represent dependencies not otherwise possible to show.  They are zero time activities added just to connect dependent tasks.

Computer programs use AOA since it is easier to represent and manage.  In general, the AON is now the predominant method.

There is a nice explanation of AOA and AON diagrams at: http://onlinemba.uww.edu/media/mcs785/modules/mod4b/part2.pdf
