What are the advantages of having a risk register?

I have started work in a new company, and apparently, their PMO obliges the project managers to create risk registers in their RMP (Risk Management Plan). I've never done one before (and all my projects were successful), and I don't see any advantages.

Can you list the advantages of a having a risk register in your risk management plan?

A risk register or log allows you to identify, analyze, and manage risks and is a tool specified by both the PMBOK(r) Guide and PRINCE2.  Many projects develop issues or fail because all the risks were not appropriately managed. For further information, you might want to read Tom Kendrick's book, Identifying and Managing Project Risk: Essential Tools for Failure-Proofing Your Project.  Its a great book and won a PMI literature award last year.
