How hard is the PMP exam?

I am a project manager with over 10 years of experience. How hard (or easy) would it be for me to pass the PMP exam. I want to take this exam because, all of a sudden, most project management jobs either require the applicants to have a PMP certification or think of the PMP as something "nice to have".

On a scale of 1 to 10, and again, given my experience, what is the difficulty of the PMP exam?

8.  It requires you to learn the PMI way of testing you knowledge, which is very different from conventional exams.   It also requires you to have much more knowledge than most people gain just through experience, because most PMs have broad experience but not deep experience (and because the majority of projects stutter or fail).  You'll be surprised how much you learn by preparing for it.

With 10 years of real-world experience, and 3 months of study of the PMBOK or a PMP bootcamp, I would rate it 7.5-8 out of 10 for difficulty.  Don't underestimate its complexity, even with your experience.  It is a scenario based exam that will take you 3 hours to complete.  You are not going to just memorize the PMBOK, walk in off the street, and take the exam.

Best of luck.
You can do it.
