Is project management a profession?

I know, this question has been asked several times before on many other websites, but in every article/thread I read, I felt that this topic is very debatable, even among project managers themselves. Some project managers believe that project management has reached a level where it can be called a profession (like law), but others state that project management is merely a process to get things done, and can never ever reach the status of a profession. Some project managers are neutral on the subject, saying that although it's not a profession now, project management can become a profession in the future, I'm among those people.

What do others think?

First things first, do you know what is the oldest profession in the world? Thought so! And if you know that, do you think it's an honor for project management to be a profession?

I find it hard to understand how come project managers always have this obsession on whether project management is a profession or not, why would they care? Why would anyone care?
